How easy is it to spread bedbugs?

I payed for a motel for 2 nights and stayed their until the second night when i saw a couple bedbugs on the pillows. I tried to take some precautions to not bring them home but what if they're in the car? Can I spread them to other peoples homes through the clothing that I'm wearing? If I do get bedbugs in my apartment will anyone who visits potentially take bedbugs home with them?
