How long should I have my fishtank light on?

During the day time is fine then shut it off when you go to bed. Fish like to rest to. If I get up during the night a happen to turn the light on I see many of the fish just resting on the bottom of the tank. Then when the light goes on and they can see me they wake right up and start swimming around.
